What’s New for 2012?
Rule Changes
The following changes will be in effect for the 2012 election cycle:
- Candidates that use campaign funds to purchase fixed assets that exceed $200 must either turn those assets in to the Citizens Clean Elections Commission no later than 30 days after the election or pay the Commission 50% of the original purchase price. If the candidate pays 50% of the original purchase price, the asset becomes their personal property.
- If a candidate hires a family member to work on the campaign the family member must be identified on the campaign finance report as “family member”.
- Candidates may pay accountants and attorneys with campaign funds for proactive compliance and advice.
Collecting $5 Qualifying Contribution Forms
Candidates for Corporation Commission may begin collecting their $5 qualifying contributions August 1, 2011. The minimum number of $5 forms required is 1,650.
Candidates for the State Legislature may begin collecting their $5 qualifying contributions on January 1, 2012. The minimum number of $5 form required is 220.
To ensure that a candidate has sufficient number of valid $5 forms, we recommend that a candidate collect at least 20% more forms than the minimum number required.
